Sicily: A rich culture

Part of Europe and Africa, yet belonging to neither, Sicily was trampled across by half the civilized world. As conquerers came and went, they left behind a rich and varied cultural deposit. This has resulted in a mixture in almost every aspect, from local vernacular, customs, cooking and art to the diverse architecture of the island. Palermo lies in a natural amphitheatre called the Conca dìOro. The architecture ranges from Arabic, Norman, Baroque to Art Nouveau. Places of interest include: Duomo, Gesu, San Giovanni degli Eremiti and the Palazzo Reale. Splendidly situated, Taormina is Sicily's window on the modern world, a symphony of pure romance. It offers a wide range of excellent restaurants, hotels, sandy beaches and spectacular views. The most illustrious relic of the past is the Greek Theatre which was built on the hill overlooking Taormina in the 3rd Century. From here, one can get a magnificent view of the volcano, Mt. Etna. South of Taormina are the ruins of ancient Naxos.

Day 4: Panarea – Lisca Bianca – Bottaro – Dattilo
After breakfast the morning will be spent circumnavigating Panarea, the smallest of the Aeolian Islands. The ancient first Greek colonizers (VI-V century b.c.) called it PANARAYAS, that means “The biggest”. for its original wideness. The geological and eruptive activity has deeply changed the appearance of the island during the millennia because of the constant earthquakes that have literally collapsed the main part of the volcanic complex in the sea, so much so that even today the island continues slowly to descend below the water level (about 1 centimetre each 10 years).  Panarea was for a long time the widest island of the Aeolian archipelago and as witness of this there are numerous little islands in the north-east (Basiluzzo, Spinazzola, Lisca Bianca, Lisca Nera, Bottaro e Dattilo) resulting from eruptions of a single, vast, original volcanic complex sunk into the  sea following a violent eruption. The volcanic activity is still clearly visible on the island in front of one of this little islands, Dallilo, where fumaroles vapours rise up through the cracks between the rocks.  The vapour is clearly visible and the water reaches high temperatures and the smell of sulphur that rises from the depths is very intense. The last curiosity for fans of diving is the presence in Basiluzzo of a small harbour and a terrace of a Roman villa on the sea bottom, witness of a time when the island was wider than today. Dinner on board. Night in roadstead in Panarea

Day 5: Stromboli
After breakfast navigation up to Stromboli where you will have time in the morning to visit the little village of the island, the central square and the church of San Vincenzo. The island is famous all over the world because there it is possible to arrive very close to the crater of the active volcano. Walking trip with the local volcanological guides till the top of the crater.  The duration of this excursion is about 6 h. and a basic fitness training is necessary. Of course the amazing scenery will worth the effort of the ascent: it will be an unforgettable show at 800 m. above the sea level.  In the afternoon tour of the island with the caique, up to Strombolicchio, a paradise for divers, thanks to its crystalline waters.  In the evening, dining on the gullet anchored in front of the "Sciara del Fuoco" to admire this astonishing natural show, the volcan Stromboli with its continuous eruptions! Return to the caique. Dinner on board and overnight in port.
