Tuscan Classic: Itinerary

Day 1 Arrive in San Gimignano

Day 2 Explore San Gimignano, its churches with fine medieval frescoes, famous towers and ancient streets. Optional circular walk (4miles).

 

Day 3 Walk across open country, through vineyards and woods, following the ancient Via Romea to Pieve a Castello. (12 miles)

 

Day 4 Time to relax at Pieve a Castello, swim or enjoy the extensive Footloose-style walks in the area (2-10 miles).

 

Day 5 Walk following  the Via Romea (now a track) through the forests Montagnola, visiting the church of Santa Colomba, with early medieval frescoes, before continuing to Siena (12.4 miles)

 

Day 6 Departure day

The best - preserved great medieval city in Europe. An abundance of outstanding 14C and 15C art and architecture. The Piazza de Campo, scene of the Palio  horserace.

 

** SAN GIMIGNANO:
Walled medieval town with world-famous towers.

 

* PIEVE A CASTELLO
Former Augustinian canonry  with proto- Romanesque  basilica-style church and rare 8th Century  baptistery with Lombard arcading.

 

* MONTERIGGIONNI
Tiny medieval village encircled  by 13C walls surmounted by watchtowers. (optional walk day 4).

 

Flights & Transport

Recommended  Destination Airports: Pisa, Florence

 

From Pisa and Florence there are trains to Poggibonsi  (1.5hrs ) then a bus to San Gimignano (1hr).
