Etruscan Lanes to Orvieto: Itinerary

Day 1 Arrive in Pitigliano
If arriving by taxi there is the possibility of approaching Pitigliano on foot (1 mile)via 2,500-year-old Etruscan Lanes. Your luggage will be transferred on to the hotel by taxi.

Day 2 Pitigliano to Sovana
Free morning to explore Pitigliano, with it medieval fortress and synagogue. Then follow an Etruscan road over a  plateau with pastures vines Sovana (4.8 miles).

 

Day 3 Free day in Sovana
Opportunities to visit its fine Ramanesque churches. Walk to see the many outstanding Etruscan ruins for which the area is renowned including the Tomba della Sirena, restored by the ATG Trust (3.6 miles).

 

Day 4 Sovana to San Quirico
From Sovana enter an impressive gorge before walking up to Sorano from where you continue up the gorge towards the ancient troglodyte village of Vitozza and the to San  Quirico ( 14 miles).

 

Day 5 San Quirico
Starting in San Quirico, cart tracks lead across farmland to an escarpment, where path descend towards the small  town of Latera . Climb through  chestnut  woods to the rim of a volcanic crater and descend to Lake Bolsena (9.7 miles). From here there will be the option of taking a boat trip to Bolsena (₤100- pay locally) or a brief road transfer.

 

Day 6 Free day in Bolsena
Free day to explore Bolsena, including the church and catacombs of Santa Cristina, site of the miracle of Orvieto, situated high on its extinct volcano, is unforgettable (10.8 miles).

 

Day 7 Bolsena to Orvieto
An old Roman road leads up through woodland and across farmland before descending again. The first view of Orvieto, situated high on its extinct volcano, is unforgettable (10.8 miles).

 

Day 8 Departure day
