Mostly upland country, Basilicata is scattered with Greek ruins, medieval abbeys, Norman castles and isolated hilltowns. Perched on the edge of a deep ravine is Matera, its most interesting city. The people of Matera once lived here in dwellings scooped out of the rocks. On a tiny stretch of Basilicata, where the Tyrrhenian Sea meets the Gulf of Policastro is the small port of Maratea. |
